FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE OLD STRIPPER WINS TOP FILM HONORS IN IOWA

Old-Time Burlesque Documentary Wins Best in Show at Interrobang Film Festival

Lamar, Missouri – The world is opening their eyes to THE OLD STRIPPER. And it starts in Iowa.

The 2018 Interrobang Film Festival gave top honors to the burlesque documentary THE OLD STRIPPER. Interrobang, in conjunction with the Des Moines Arts Festival and AARP Movies for Grownups, awarded the film with the Best in Show award for the festival. The film, made by the real-life Mother/Son filmmaking team Jack Truman and Opal Dockery, is an epic documentary film about a burlesque legend who travels across the country, coast to coast, visiting her old dancing cities of yesterday.

The Des Moines screening at Interrobang was the World Premiere for the feature film.

Dockery was a burlesque dancer for over 20 years in the 1970's and '80's. Truman, her son, and director of the film, grew up on the road with her during her burlesque circuit.

This is very special to me”, Truman stated in press materials. “The burlesque industry is a lost era. I grew up in that environment, in the adult entertainment business. As a child, I was raised around nudity and pornography. And as a filmmaker, I want to open people's eyes to a world they know nothing about. We are honored to have the Interrobang Film Festival host the World Premiere of this film. Receiving this award is icing on the cake”.

Over last summer, Truman and Dockery traveled coast to coast, to all 48 states and the District of Columbia, on an epic journey shooting footage in every state nationwide, interviewing dancers young and old, visiting Opal's old dancing cities from her burlesque circuit, seeing landmarks around the country, and interviewing people in the burlesque industry.

This is a story only we can tell”, says Truman.

Earlier this month, Dockery was inducted in the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, Nevada.

THE OLD STRIPPER is scheduled to play the worldwide film festival circuit this summer and fall.

World Premiere - THE OLD STRIPPER - 2018 Interrobang Film Festival

DES MOINES TO HOST WORLD PREMIERE OF THE OLD STRIPPER

Old-Time Burlesque Documentary to Screen Saturday at Interrobang Film Festival

Lamar, Missouri – The world is about to open their eyes to THE OLD STRIPPER. And it will all start this week in Des Moines.

The 2018 Interrobang Film Festival will host the World Premiere of the underground feature film documentary THE OLD STRIPPER on Saturday, June 23rd at the Des Moines Public Library. The film, made by the real-life Mother/Son filmmaking team Jack Truman and Opal Dockery, is an epic documentary film about a burlesque legend who travels across the country, coast to coast, visting her old dancing cities of yesterday.

Dockery was a burlesque dancer for over 20 years in the 1970's and '80's. Truman, her son, and director of the film, grew up on the road with her during her burlesque circuit.

This film is very personal to me”, Truman stated in press materials. “The burlesque industry is a lost era. I grew up in that environment, in the adult entertainment business. As a child, I was raised around nudity and pornography. And as a filmmaker, I want to open people's eyes to a world they know nothing about”.

Dockery states “I was a stripper for 22 years. It was a different time. I have been wanting to return to the cities I danced in for a long time. I wanted to find other dancers from that time for us to share our stories, and meet the new dancers of today to see how the times have changed and also if they are the same”.

Short Little Fat Guy Wanting to Make Her Cum

Opal, THE OLD STRIPPER

One week when I was dancing as a stripper in Detroit, Michigan, a stripper on the show - Misty Knight - told me a very funny story. She said she was in the little cafe next to the burlesque theater when a short little fat guy came up and propositioned her for $100.00.

She went to his motel room. She said she could hardly even see it let alone feel it. He was all red in the face and puffing when he said, "I wanna make you cum." He could just barely get the words out. She laughed and replied, "How in the Hell do you think you're gonna make ME cum?"

Hustling the Young Man and the Old Man

I was working at the Two O'Clock Club in Boston, Massachusetts as a stripper. It was a place where I was required to hustle drinks between my stage shows. I had to go from customer to customer and ask them to buy me a drink.

Sometimes it would be pretty difficult to get the men to buy drinks, especially, since they were so expensive; so the main idea was to make them think they were going to get more for their money than just buying a drink.

When they would complain about the price of the drink. I would tell them that they were not actually paying for the drink but for
my company.

This satisfied a lot of them but not all. For the ones who were not satisfied with this explanation, I led them to believe that they would actually get something more for their money than the drink or my mere presence. This was done sometimes in a fashion of saying, "Let's have a party!"

One young man who was really a cheap skate did not want to pay $6.00 for a single drink for me. I saw he was cheap from the beginning. I told him, "Don't you want to have a party?" as I rubbed my hands on his back and shoulders. He said, "You mean all I have to pay is $6.00?" I reassured him that $6.00 would get him a party with just the two of us.

As expected, his idea of a party was quite different from what he received. He bought the drink. I sat down. He said, "Well?" I said, "Isn't this fun? Just the two of us sitting here drinking and having a party?" Needless to say he did not buy me another drink.

Another funny incident that stands out in my mind is the time I approached an old man with really thick glasses - you couldn't even see his eyes - for a drink. I soon realized that I could get more than a $6.00 drink out of him.

I hollered, "Let's have a party! We can have so much fun! Come on! Let's have a party!" He stared in space with his thick glasses as he said, "How much?" I said, "$20.00.” Of course, like the young guy buying the $6.00 drink, he thought he was entitled to more than a bottle of champagne.

He held up his index finger and said, "Just a minute.” Then he went in the men's restroom. He came back with a folded $20.00 bill. I could tell it had been folded for a long time - probably in his shoe.

We went and sat in the dark area where you sat when the guys bought bottles of champagne. It was a booth. We always had the guy sit on the inside, in case, he tried to pin us in for some reason.

The waitress brought the bottle of champagne over and sat the bucket of ice with the champagne in it on the floor placing it where I could reach down and get it. She placed glasses on the table
for us.

I excitedly chanted, "Wow! Isn't this fun, we're having a party!" The old man said, "Nothin's happenin' yet.” I kept hollering over and over, "This is so much fun! I just love this party! Don't you like it?" The old man kept saying, "Nothin's happenin' yet!"

I kept pouring the champagne in our glasses, half of it in the bucket, and part of it on the floor - anything to get rid of it. I kept hollering about the fun we were having, and the old man kept saying how nothing was happening. Then the bottle was empty.

I held the bottle up and hollered, "Oh! Wow! We need another bottle of champagne! We gotta keep partying! Let's get another bottle." Reality finally set in on the old man as he hollered, "Get outta here!" I quietly - LEFT! ---

Black Stripper at the Fruit & Vegetable Store - Canton, Ohio

THE OLD STRIPPER
A Feature Documentary Film

A black girl who I had worked with for quite sometime - we were both strippers on the Al Baker circuit - told me the following story. I do not remember her name.

We were working together at the State Theater in Canton, Ohio for the week. Across the street on the same side of the road on the corner was the Golden Pheasant Restaurant owned by Mr. Manos, an old Greek man. Next door was a Greek grocery store owned by him. One or two doors down was another small grocery store which had, mainly, fresh fruits and vegetables. It was more what you would call a vegetable and fruit store.

My co-worker said she went to buy some fruit and vegetables at this store. She got a grocery cart and started walking around. Almost immediately one of the women who worked at the store started following her around. My friend just acted like she did not notice. She filled up her grocery cart to the hilt. The employee tailed her all the time she was shopping.

The stripper went to pay for the groceries. The same woman who had been following her was all happy and excited as she went to the register to check her out. We later learned that she was the owner. She figured the total and told my friend what she owed. My friend said, "I don't want any of it.” The woman screamed, "What?" The stripper replied, "You've been following me around like I'm gonna steal a piece of your fruit. I work next door at the burlesk. I don't have to steal your fruit. I don't want any of it!"

I was glad she did that. Back in the early 1970's people were still so openly prejudiced. This store keeper not only had a prejudice against blacks but, also, strippers. I feel that the stripper demonstrated liberation for her race as well as her profession.

Kansas City Kitty Showing Me the Ropes

THE OLD STRIPPER
A Feature Documentary Film
Directed by Jack Truman
Starring Opal Dockery

KANSAS CITY KITTY SHOWING ME THE ROPES

Kansas City Kitty took me under her wing and showed me the "ropes" of the stripping business. She was an older lady who had been dancing for quite some time. If it had not been for her advice, I would have made a lot more mistakes than I did.

We worked at the Pink Pussy in Kansas City, Missouri as well as the Folly's Burlesk Theater. At the Pink Pussy Cat, we were strippers. At the Folly's Burlesk, I was a stripper and she was
a cashier.

She taught me how to put on pasties - a stiff cloth of material shaped like the nipple that covered only the nipple. We had to wear this because of the Kansas City laws - no nipples could show.

She taught me how to put on the different layers of my outfit - such as G-String first - then G-Strap over that or some sort of clothing that resembled panties.

She sold me my first dancing gown for $10.00. That was a lot for me back then; but it was a good deal. It was a really pretty red, sequin gown trimmed in black feathers. It was the same gown I had seen in many visions when I was married and did not even comprehend what a stripper was. Being a stripper was the furthest thing from my mind back then. But the visions would haunt me, especially, at night when I lay awake and could not go to sleep. Not only would I see myself stripping on a stage in front of a bunch of men; but I would, also, see my children in different states. All this proved to be true.

Kansas City Kitty, also, helped me make life-long decisions concerning my children. I did not know what to do with my children if I went on the road to dance. It was time for John to go to the first grade. She suggested putting him in a military school.

That was the best advice I ever got from anyone concerning my children. I just wish I would have kept him in there for his twelve years of school; so does he.

Kansas Kitty Kitty proved to be very helpful in teaching me how to get money out of men. She would make up a story that we were collecting money to get a pizza. The guys would chip in. For some reason, the pizza never did come.

A "guy" that really liked me a lot was going to take me out to spend money on me for such things as clothes and boots. Kansas City Kitty wanted me to get in practice on conning men; so she gave me a list of things for me to get for her. Some of the things were different pieces of material and a bottle of her favorite
perfume - Taboo. I had "the guy" take me to the costume shop. I got the material she wanted. He said, “That looks like material Kansas City Kitty makes her outfits out of.” I was not sure of myself and got really nervous; so I was really afraid to get the perfume. I thought he would catch on to that, too. I did not want her to be mad at me; so I bought the perfume for her myself. This really made her mad. She told me that it was not the perfume that she cared about.  She wanted me to get the “feel” for conning men. I did over the years; and I am glad.

One time before I learned my lessons well from Kansas City Kitty, I went home at a “guy's” apartment and spent the night with him. I told her about it the next day. She said, “Well, what is he going to do for you?” I said that I guessed nothing and that he had offered to give me gas money; but I turned it down. She held her head in her hands explaining to me that I should get things and money out of these guys - and to not let them have anything free.

One night, after I had spent the night with him, he came in the club saying he was looking for his "Little Rose". By then, I finally had decided in my mind what he was looking for was a free piece of ass anytime he wanted. I told Kansas City Kitty, "He looks like an old hound dog lookin' for a bitch dog in heat.” She laughed so much! I think she knew as I did that I had finally seen the light about these guys. From now on, I would be no one else's "Little Rose". At least, not a "free rose".

The first time I went on the road, Kansas City Kitty gave me a necklace with St. Christopher to help protect me. She was a Catholic. I was not; but I felt that it might help me. I wish I still
had it.

Kansas City Kitty was oriental. It was really difficult to see what she looked like because she wore a lot of garb on her face - big dark glasses, big bushy blond hair, and lots of make-up. She would holler from the stage, "I'm a clown!" She twirled the tassels on her breasts; but they were false breasts - I heard - she did not tell me this. I, also, heard that she had received silicone injections and had made them too big which caused her to have them removed. I, also, heard that she had cancer. I guess it was cancer of the breasts.

One thing I did not like about her advice was when she tried to get me to get small amounts of silicone injections. But this is the only thing I remember that was bad advice. Luckily, I had enough "horse-sense" to know that this was not for me.

Kansas City Kitty always encouraged me to start saving money and invest it. She said her relatives had cheated her out of a bunch of money - something to do with a savings she had had with one of the relatives. She had some money saved in a savings and loan under this relative's name. This person had died; and the other relatives kept her part of the money even though they knew it belonged to her. She cautioned me to never invest my money in a savings
and loan.

I really do appreciate all the time Kansas City Kitty took with me to help get me on my feet as a stripper as well as the special interest she took in my personal life with my kids. From the first time she said, “Do you really want to get into it?” - (referring to the stripping business); and I answered, “Yes.” - She showed me the “ropes” and gave me priceless advice on everything. I wish she were alive; so I could say, “Thank you.”

Having My Period on Stage in Syracuse

THE OLD STRIPPER
A Feature Film Documentary
Starring Opal Dockery

I started my period on stage once in Syracuse, New York. It did not seem to bother the customers. Most were such perverted assholes anyway. Some were not, but even the ones who were not cme there for any "off-the-wall" happenings - like an escape from reality. After the show, I remember that I asked a regular customer to go get me some tampons. I think his name was Howard. I can still remember what he looked like - older and always nice. He said, "I think you need some!"

THE OLD STRIPPER - A Feature Documentary Film

Jack and I are on the road shooting the feature documentary THE OLD STRIPPER this summer. Started traveling in June. And this is the trip of a lifetime. We're traveling to all 48 states coast to coast nationwide, visiting my dancing cities and states I danced in back in the 1970's and 80's. Plus, we're interviewing burlesque dancers nationwide, young and old. This is going to be a great documentary film.

My son, director Jack Truman, is the only one who can make this movie. He grew up on the road with me on my burlesque circuit.

This is the trip of a lifetime.

LORI AND I HIDING OUR PAY IN OUR SUITCASES

LORI AND I HIDING OUR PAY IN OUR SUITCASES

When my friend, Lori, and I decided to go to Boston, Massachusetts to strip at the Two O'Clock Club, we were broke. I used the payment that I was going to send off to my son John's military school for our plane tickets. We were able to get a draw at the club when we arrived to get us by for the week until we made some money.

The night we got paid we hid our money in our suitcases. The dressing room was upstairs above the club. We got our suitcases and walked down the stairs. When we reached the bottom of the stairs, we both looked into our suitcases to see if the money was still in them.

What was so funny about this is we had just put the money in the suitcases right before we walked down the stairs. I do not know where we thought it would go. Also, neither one of us knew the other one was going to look in her suitcase. We laughed about it. Our brains were on the same wave length. I guess it had been so long since we had had any money that we wanted to make sure it did not go anywhere.

Giving My Kids to a 'Regular' Family

THE OLD STRIPPER

GIVING MY KIDS TO A “REGULAR” FAMILY

I have always prided myself with the fact that I raised my two kids on my own with no help from anyone. There were many difficult times due to lack of money. There were many happy times. The happy times far outnumbered the difficult times. The whole time my kids were little and needed me was happy - even though we were not as well-off as most.

I always placed their needs and desires above anything and anybody. I know this made them happy; but it, also, made
me happy.

Sometimes during the period that I was raising my kids, a smart-ass would tell me that I should give my children to a "regular"
family – a “home” - a mom and dad situation - and quit dragging them all over the country. But I loved them and still do more than life itself. I could not bare to think about their being with
someone else.

One person who always aggravated me to give my children away was Frenchie, a regular dancer in Detroit. Her boyfriend or husband, I do not know which, was the manager. She was always telling me I should give up my kids. People like her I
hated immediately.

I am just glad that I never did listen to all the ignorant advice such as this. There was never a doubt in my mind that I was doing the right thing by keeping my kids. I was sure of it then; and I am sure of it now.

I tried to teach my kids that a house did not make a home; and when we were together, we were at home no matter where we were. I, also, tried to teach them that when we were apart – me at work traveling and them in their boarding schools – that we were still at “home” in our hearts and minds.

Many tell me this was selfish and maybe it was. But I am able to look in the mirror today and know that I did the best I knew how
and did not give them up.

If I would have given them up, maybe they would have been happier. But I would not go back and change it. I would keep my kids. Maybe I really am a selfish person drowning my selfishness with love. Maybe I was really placing my great desire before my children which was to have them with me. Maybe all the good things I did for them was really for me.

George Feeding Chico

THE OLD STRIPPER

GEORGE FEEDING CHICO

Lori Lanier and I were stripping in Cleveland, Ohio. We were going to only be gone a few days for the booking; so we kept our motel room rented in Canton, Ohio because that is where we usually stayed when we were not working. My boyfriend, who was one of the projectionists at the State Burlesk Theater, lived in Canton; so I liked to be around him as much as possible.

The manager at the burlesk theater in Cleveland offered to book us for two weeks. We took the offer. There was only one
problem – Chico.

Chico was Lori's spider monkey. She had left him in his cage with
enough food and water for the length of time that we would be
gone. But if we stayed for two more weeks, he did not have enough
food and water.
We were not sure what to do. Then we decided to call my boyfriend.
He agreed to take what Lori told him to take - apples - to the motel
and give them to the monkey.

When we got back to Canton it was really funny. George had just
thrown the apples in the cage. He had not cut them up or anything.

He said that he had gone to the desk clerk and told him that he
needed to give the apples to the monkey. The desk clerk told him
that they could not let him in our room without our permission. He
told them, “I don't want in the damn room! Here's the apples! You
give them to the monkey!” They let him in the room I guess they did
not want to feed the monkey!

Doing My Headstand at the Bar

DOING MY HEADSTAND AT THE BAR

There was a bar right next door to the hotel where I stayed in Syracuse, New York. Some of the girls I was dancing with and I went there occasionally. One night we went there, and I got really crazy.

We were talking about my headstand that I did in my shows. All the guys wanted to see me do it. I told them that I could not do it without a pillow. One guy said, "Here's a pillow!" - as he patted his stomach. I said, "O.K.! I'll try it.”

He laid down on the floor. I used his belly for a pillow and did my headstand. It was really funny!

That night the bar got on fire. The following day I went next door to see the damage. The owner was there. He said, "Well, Wild Star. I guess you just made it too hot over here last night!"

Becoming a Stripper Led Me to Become a Vegetarian

BECOMING A STRIPPER LED ME TO BECOME A VEGETARIAN

I feel that everyone should pay back to the world some way for the privilege of having lived. I feel that my way of doing this will be to fight for animal rights.

I was dragged through Hell to make me realize that it is wrong to kill animals. I feel that it is my "duty" to the world to, at least, let it know that killing animals is wrong. There is not a doubt in my mind about this.

If I had not been left to raise my kids on my own and become a stripper, I really feel that I would not have ever become a vegetarian. I knew I was going to have to raise them on my own with no help from anyone. I wanted to, at least, raise them until they were eighteen. I decided to study health. I figured if I could keep healthy, then I could live until they were both, at least, eighteen and able to take care of themselves.

By studying health, I realized that it was unhealthy to eat animals. Later on, I became radical about feeling sorry for the animals who are victims of slaughter and man's various appetites.

If I can be thankful for anything I have accomplished in this life, it is the fact that I realized that it is wrong to kill animals. All the hard times I had to go through was worth it if it meant I would realize this. If I had my life to live over, and knew all the hard times I would have to endure – but in the long run I would realize the injustice society dishes out to animals – I would say, “I will endure these trials and tribulations and be dragged through the “Pits of Hell” if that is what it would take just to know that it is wrong to kill animals.”

I have enjoyed all the worldly things. I have done everything I want to do as far as the world can offer me. I have all the worldly
"things" I ever want. Now it is my time to give back to the world. I feel that by letting people know it is wrong to kill animals is my way of doing this.

Best Decision I Ever Made to Become a Stripper

Opal Dockery
THE OLD STRIPPER

BEST DECISION I EVER MADE TO BECOME A STRIPPER

It was difficult to be a stripper on the road; but through it all, the good times outweighed the bad. This job enabled my children and myself to travel and see things that would have been impossible if I had worked a regular job. It was like being on a vacation all the time and getting paid for it. Whenever I think back, I know that becoming a stripper was the wisest decision I ever made in my life.

The following best describes my deepest feelings and is from my story in this book,VISION OF BECOMING A STRIPPER: But there was an unsettling deep inside me. The unsettling that has been with me all my life. The unsettling that I have had ever since I have had any sense of consciousness. The unsettling that will not let me stop and be satisfied with a certain situation or certain type of life for any length of time. The unsettling that knaws at my insides to do something else. The unsettling that will not let me settle down - my spirit.

Different Roads to Finding Your Spirit

Opal Dockery
THE OLD STRIPPER
A Dixie Production

I think it is imperative that each of us find our own true self - our own true spirit. All of us do not reach this level on the same road. We all take different roads at times. Who is to say that one road is better or worse than the other? The road that is right for one person may be wrong for another. The end result is what counts. A person might cook rice differently from someone else. As long as it is edible the way he or she likes it; and it serves as a good nutrition value, who cares how it was prepared?

The road I took to find my true spirit and to come face to face with it was quite an unusual road. When I became a stripper, this is the road I traveled that led me to enlightenment. I discovered my spirit. I introduced myself to my spirit. I came face to face with my spirit. I reached a level so high that I would not have been able to cope with the beautiful feeling if it had been any higher.

My spirit has been with me forever. It just took this – what most common ordinary people would call irrational act – to permit me to meet my spirit and to always know that my spirit is continually with me and will always guide me.

My spirit guided me through all the hard times of raising my children. Without the knowledge of my spirit, I do not see how I could have managed this. At that time, I did not know how to take care of myself – let alone two little kids and to raise them to adulthood.

My spirit continually is with me as I make all decisions in my life. I have so much thanks to the road I took as being a stripper and an outcast of society. This decision was the best one I ever made in my life. I truly did find my spirit in them most unconventional way.

Getting In Trouble With a Pimp

GETTING IN TROUBLE WITH A PIMP

To this day, I really do not know why I did this. I could have been killed. I guess it was just out of stupid curiosity. I do not know. At the time, I think I felt that I was trying to educate myself by understanding different people and different personalities - what made them tick. Maybe this was the reason I did what I am about to tell you about. I do not know. I could back-up my stupidity for this particular incident by saying it was for the purpose of understanding personalities based on the fact that I earned my bachelor of science in psychology years later. And I must admit that the first hand experience I received provided more information than anything I could have ever obtained from a textbook.

There was this young, good looking black man that hung around the Two O'Clock Club where I danced as a stripper in Boston, Massachusetts. He never bought any drinks and would say, "No." when hustled to buy some. He seemed to be friends with one of the waitresses. I found out later from other dancers that he was a pimp.

I had never talked to a pimp before as far as I knew. I told myself that I should talk to him and try to understand this type of personality. The approach I decided to use was not too appropriate as far as my personal safety was concerned.
I could not go to him and say, "Heh! I hear you're a pimp. Could I interview you and study your personality?" So I decided on the dangerous approach. I acted like I wanted to work for him.

As far as I can remember, I just went up and told him I wanted to make more money, and I wasn't sure how to do it. I needed someone to show me how. I played the dumb stripper act to the hilt. It worked too good.

Immediately he lit into me. "Listen, Bitch, give me some money. If you haven't got paid, give me what you got on you now. You hear me, Bitch? You pay me to be your man. I know where you work. I know where you live. You have me some money by 2:00 a.m. or leave the state of Massachusetts. You hear me, Bitch? The money at 2:00 a.m. or else!"

Needless to say, I was scared. I went and told my girlfriend and roommate, Lori, about what happened. I told her that she didn't have to walk home with me tonight if she didn't want to because he might be there to hurt me. She said she would never leave me alone to face someone like that.

He never showed up after work. I sure was glad. As a

matter-of-fact, I do not ever remember seeing him around after that.

I think my friend must have said something to him. She had a way of being forceful with words towards these type of men.

I watched my words AND my curiosity very carefully from that moment on.

Jack - Offs Taking Us Girls Out to Eat

THE OLD STRIPPER

JACK-OFFS TAKING US GIRLS OUT TO EAT

Being a stripper draws you to many men who are after your body. Some people refer to them as "stage-door Johnnys". Most of us strippers back then referred to them as "jack-offs". We would get everything we could out of them without going to bed with them. One thing we could always count on was a free meal out of them anytime. They were always wanting to "take us out to eat".

It got to the point where it was better to be hungry or buy my own food. Most of the time when a "jack-off" would take me out to eat, he would just stare at me. No matter what I talked about, I could see him undressing me with his eyes.

It was good to have these guys around to pick up the tab for a lot of things such as food or clothes or whatever else I could think to use them. But for the most part, the aggravation of their presence was not worth it.
