THE OLD STRIPPER WINS TOP FILM HONORS IN IOWA

Old-Time Burlesque Documentary Wins Best in Show at Interrobang Film Festival

Lamar, Missouri – The world is opening their eyes to THE OLD STRIPPER. And it starts in Iowa.

The 2018 Interrobang Film Festival gave top honors to the burlesque documentary THE OLD STRIPPER. Interrobang, in conjunction with the Des Moines Arts Festival and AARP Movies for Grownups, awarded the film with the Best in Show award for the festival. The film, made by the real-life Mother/Son filmmaking team Jack Truman and Opal Dockery, is an epic documentary film about a burlesque legend who travels across the country, coast to coast, visiting her old dancing cities of yesterday.

The Des Moines screening at Interrobang was the World Premiere for the feature film.

Dockery was a burlesque dancer for over 20 years in the 1970's and '80's. Truman, her son, and director of the film, grew up on the road with her during her burlesque circuit.

This is very special to me”, Truman stated in press materials. “The burlesque industry is a lost era. I grew up in that environment, in the adult entertainment business. As a child, I was raised around nudity and pornography. And as a filmmaker, I want to open people's eyes to a world they know nothing about. We are honored to have the Interrobang Film Festival host the World Premiere of this film. Receiving this award is icing on the cake”.

Over last summer, Truman and Dockery traveled coast to coast, to all 48 states and the District of Columbia, on an epic journey shooting footage in every state nationwide, interviewing dancers young and old, visiting Opal's old dancing cities from her burlesque circuit, seeing landmarks around the country, and interviewing people in the burlesque industry.

This is a story only we can tell”, says Truman.

Earlier this month, Dockery was inducted in the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, Nevada.

THE OLD STRIPPER is scheduled to play the worldwide film festival circuit this summer and fall.

DES MOINES TO HOST WORLD PREMIERE OF THE OLD STRIPPER

Old-Time Burlesque Documentary to Screen Saturday at Interrobang Film Festival

Lamar, Missouri – The world is about to open their eyes to THE OLD STRIPPER. And it will all start this week in Des Moines.

The 2018 Interrobang Film Festival will host the World Premiere of the underground feature film documentary THE OLD STRIPPER on Saturday, June 23rd at the Des Moines Public Library. The film, made by the real-life Mother/Son filmmaking team Jack Truman and Opal Dockery, is an epic documentary film about a burlesque legend who travels across the country, coast to coast, visting her old dancing cities of yesterday.

Dockery was a burlesque dancer for over 20 years in the 1970's and '80's. Truman, her son, and director of the film, grew up on the road with her during her burlesque circuit.

This film is very personal to me”, Truman stated in press materials. “The burlesque industry is a lost era. I grew up in that environment, in the adult entertainment business. As a child, I was raised around nudity and pornography. And as a filmmaker, I want to open people's eyes to a world they know nothing about”.

Dockery states “I was a stripper for 22 years. It was a different time. I have been wanting to return to the cities I danced in for a long time. I wanted to find other dancers from that time for us to share our stories, and meet the new dancers of today to see how the times have changed and also if they are the same”.

Short Little Fat Guy Wanting to Make Her Cum

Opal, THE OLD STRIPPER

One week when I was dancing as a stripper in Detroit, Michigan, a stripper on the show - Misty Knight - told me a very funny story. She said she was in the little cafe next to the burlesque theater when a short little fat guy came up and propositioned her for $100.00.

She went to his motel room. She said she could hardly even see it let alone feel it. He was all red in the face and puffing when he said, "I wanna make you cum." He could just barely get the words out. She laughed and replied, "How in the Hell do you think you're gonna make ME cum?"

Hustling the Young Man and the Old Man

I was working at the Two O'Clock Club in Boston, Massachusetts as a stripper. It was a place where I was required to hustle drinks between my stage shows. I had to go from customer to customer and ask them to buy me a drink.

Sometimes it would be pretty difficult to get the men to buy drinks, especially, since they were so expensive; so the main idea was to make them think they were going to get more for their money than just buying a drink.

When they would complain about the price of the drink. I would tell them that they were not actually paying for the drink but for
my company.

This satisfied a lot of them but not all. For the ones who were not satisfied with this explanation, I led them to believe that they would actually get something more for their money than the drink or my mere presence. This was done sometimes in a fashion of saying, "Let's have a party!"

One young man who was really a cheap skate did not want to pay $6.00 for a single drink for me. I saw he was cheap from the beginning. I told him, "Don't you want to have a party?" as I rubbed my hands on his back and shoulders. He said, "You mean all I have to pay is $6.00?" I reassured him that $6.00 would get him a party with just the two of us.

As expected, his idea of a party was quite different from what he received. He bought the drink. I sat down. He said, "Well?" I said, "Isn't this fun? Just the two of us sitting here drinking and having a party?" Needless to say he did not buy me another drink.

Another funny incident that stands out in my mind is the time I approached an old man with really thick glasses - you couldn't even see his eyes - for a drink. I soon realized that I could get more than a $6.00 drink out of him.

I hollered, "Let's have a party! We can have so much fun! Come on! Let's have a party!" He stared in space with his thick glasses as he said, "How much?" I said, "$20.00.” Of course, like the young guy buying the $6.00 drink, he thought he was entitled to more than a bottle of champagne.

He held up his index finger and said, "Just a minute.” Then he went in the men's restroom. He came back with a folded $20.00 bill. I could tell it had been folded for a long time - probably in his shoe.

We went and sat in the dark area where you sat when the guys bought bottles of champagne. It was a booth. We always had the guy sit on the inside, in case, he tried to pin us in for some reason.

The waitress brought the bottle of champagne over and sat the bucket of ice with the champagne in it on the floor placing it where I could reach down and get it. She placed glasses on the table
for us.

I excitedly chanted, "Wow! Isn't this fun, we're having a party!" The old man said, "Nothin's happenin' yet.” I kept hollering over and over, "This is so much fun! I just love this party! Don't you like it?" The old man kept saying, "Nothin's happenin' yet!"

I kept pouring the champagne in our glasses, half of it in the bucket, and part of it on the floor - anything to get rid of it. I kept hollering about the fun we were having, and the old man kept saying how nothing was happening. Then the bottle was empty.

I held the bottle up and hollered, "Oh! Wow! We need another bottle of champagne! We gotta keep partying! Let's get another bottle." Reality finally set in on the old man as he hollered, "Get outta here!" I quietly - LEFT! ---

Black Stripper at the Fruit & Vegetable Store - Canton, Ohio

THE OLD STRIPPER
A Feature Documentary Film

A black girl who I had worked with for quite sometime - we were both strippers on the Al Baker circuit - told me the following story. I do not remember her name.

We were working together at the State Theater in Canton, Ohio for the week. Across the street on the same side of the road on the corner was the Golden Pheasant Restaurant owned by Mr. Manos, an old Greek man. Next door was a Greek grocery store owned by him. One or two doors down was another small grocery store which had, mainly, fresh fruits and vegetables. It was more what you would call a vegetable and fruit store.

My co-worker said she went to buy some fruit and vegetables at this store. She got a grocery cart and started walking around. Almost immediately one of the women who worked at the store started following her around. My friend just acted like she did not notice. She filled up her grocery cart to the hilt. The employee tailed her all the time she was shopping.

The stripper went to pay for the groceries. The same woman who had been following her was all happy and excited as she went to the register to check her out. We later learned that she was the owner. She figured the total and told my friend what she owed. My friend said, "I don't want any of it.” The woman screamed, "What?" The stripper replied, "You've been following me around like I'm gonna steal a piece of your fruit. I work next door at the burlesk. I don't have to steal your fruit. I don't want any of it!"

I was glad she did that. Back in the early 1970's people were still so openly prejudiced. This store keeper not only had a prejudice against blacks but, also, strippers. I feel that the stripper demonstrated liberation for her race as well as her profession.
